Song to Song is the latest film to be released by Terrance Malick. Song to Song centers around two love triangles of musicians and artists in Austin. The film shares many similarities to Malick's last three films. All shot by the same DOP Emmanuel Lubezki and with production design done by Jack Fisk. Another thing it shares is the lack of traditional story structure. As of late Malick's films have been very loose on story more of showing and recounting moments in the characters life. They often end the same with the characters either never really finding what they are looking for or dealing with their inner demons. Ive read that a lot of the last few movies barely include a real writing process. A lot of times Malick will just tell the actors a feeling and film them interacting building the story around that feeling. Apparently in his last movie Knight of Cups, he walked around handing actors note cards with random phrases to help them build their character in the scene.
Though the film features unconventional story telling I truly enjoy it and is similar to the way I make films based more on feeling than plot driven story. However the fourth time around I am getting a bit of fatigue from the stories and emotions feeling so similar. On the next time around I'd like Malick to explore different themes or make a sequel to one of these to get better character development and more plot.
